The pattern is straightforward: anything wood-based will absorb and hold moisture if the outer coating is compromised, and once wood-based siding is wet for extended periods, decay is a matter of time, not chance. Fiber cement doesn't have that vulnerability because there's no wood fiber to decay in the first place.

Warning Signs of Hidden Rot

Rot behind siding is often invisible from the street for a long time. A few signs are worth checking for a couple of times a year:

  • Soft or spongy spots when pressed gently, especially near the bottom of walls and below windows
  • Peeling or bubbling paint, which often means moisture is trying to escape from underneath
  • Dark staining or streaking below joints, trim, or fastener lines
  • A musty smell in an adjacent interior room, especially near exterior walls

A drainage gap — sometimes called a rainscreen — is a small air space built between the back of the siding and the weather barrier. It sounds minor, but it changes how a wall handles water dramatically. Instead of siding sitting flush against wet sheathing, any moisture that gets past the outer surface has room to drain down and air to help it dry out, rather than sitting trapped against wood.

This detail matters more in a climate like King County's, where walls rarely get long dry stretches to fully evaporate trapped moisture. It's a detail worth asking any contractor about directly — not every installation includes one, and it's one of the cheaper upgrades relative to the protection it adds.
